Fox Rabies Update

Our post on Freedom of Screech (below) wound up with the hopeful note that advertisers had begun to withdraw their sponsorship of Glenn Beck’s racist hatefest on Fox News.

The list of vanishing sponsors has now grown to 36, including Clorox, CVS Caremark, Radio Shack, Sprint, even the right wing fortress that runs Walmart. And UPS Stores has temporarily suspended advertising on Fox News as a whole.

Credit for this rare surge of sanity goes to Color of Change, an organization advocating political activism among African Americans. They contacted 60 advertisers and showed them the incitements to hatred and violence they were supporting with their ad dollars.

Not that all of the advertisers are pure of heart. CVS Caremark advertises regularly on Fox but claims it hadn’t said anything either way about Beck until the issue was raised.

A spokeswoman for the company said, “We support vigorous debate … but we expect it to be informed, inclusive and respectful.”

Really. How about “fair and balanced?”

If there is anyone capable of informed, inclusive, and respectful debate on Fox News, they will soon be found out and fired.

So it’s nice to see at least a few responsible advertisers firing Fox.
