Pity the poor parasite! I can almost hear the violins. They're playing the heart-rending strains of The Greedy Son of a Bitch Waltz.

You have to look at it from the perspective of the poor banker: can you imagine the stress of having to evict people from the homes you loaned them the money to buy, even though you knew they couldn't afford it? I mean honestly, how are these poor bastards going to afford their country club dues and private jets if we don't help them out? Pity the poor banker who has to answer to not only his/her share holders, but the Federal government. I mean, what's a greedy son of a bitch to do in these days of shock and awe? Of course they need exorbitant fees; otherwise they might go down the drain and take the rest of us with them. Uh, hold the phone ... isn't that what just happened? If bankers actually had to work for a living, nobody would want to be a banker, and where would that leave us? About where we are right now.

Excellent. We published this post last night on DailyKos, and one of the first comments we got was a recommendation of credit unions in preference to banks -- but that commenter's reasons were a little different. His idea was to respond to the banks' systematic chiseling by defunding them. IIn other words, if we give our business to commercial banks and they respond by cheating us every which way, just take the money away from them. Either way, it's a good idea.

This is why we switched to our local credit union some 7 years ago. Now our money stays in our local community. We get interest on our checking account, we get interest on our savings account, we have actual people to interact with, and we get understandable, simple explanations. Plus, as members, we have an ownership role in the company. Banking as it SHOULD be.

I agree that it's deliberate -- and now it adds up to 52% of their income, so you bet it's part of their business strategy. Systematic thievery, most of it perfectly legal because they own the Senate and, under Bush, they owned the regulators. Maybe it's time for an epidemic of class-action lawsuits on behalf of consumers.

Call me jaded, but I believe that banks intentionally do this kind of shit all of the time. I'll even go so far as to say that it is a part of their business strategy. Most Americans are intimidated by banks and/or don't want to be bothered with questioning this kind of stuff so they unwittingly participate in making it worse for everyone.

I used to just trust banks, but not anymore. I carefully review every banking and credit transaction we make. And I can't tell you how many “mistakes' I've found.

Sounds about right -- now that the government owns both the banks and the car companies. Comes next, a fee for downshifting from Drive to Second.

The best is yet to come, as bankers leave the penny ante stuff for the big time, running auto companies in concert with Big labor and developing innovative new ideas for taxing the shit out of a somnolent citizenry.
