Late Innings

Back when I was chasing baseballs among the cow pies in right field for the Eighty Four, PA Little League Pirates and our erstwhile manager Squeak Mounts, my father would pass the time in the stands mooing at the cows in the center field barns, or pondering the literary possibilities of the game of baseball.

One afternoon he found the perfect title for the definitive Little League book: “The Endless Inning“.  As he mentioned it to my Mother, a routine grounder eluded the second baseman and rolled toward the daydreaming right-fielder on its way to another inside-the-park home run.

Time passes.  Yesterday, my son Jake’s team won their first round game in the playoffs, against a team that had beaten them earlier in the season by way of some suspect (I suspect desperate) umpiring.  Afterwards , he said to me, “That was a great win … we really got them back for that earlier loss.  It was good revenge.  Revenge will be our fuel in the playoffs.”  (I don’t know where he comes up with this stuff … I think he reads too much.)

Anyway, that gave me the title for the sequel to ‘The Endless Inning“:

The Cubs of Monte Cristo

Somebody get me rewrite!

  1. What goes around comes around, especially in Little League, and especially when your son is a sequel. Like, where on earth could Jake have picked up the habit of reading too much?

  4. This third generation of Van Dines that I know will be fine so long as he doesn’t hold the book while waiting for a fly ball. That would be Over Van Dining. Now I’m trying to tie this into Leibniz at 3 am. Whooee!
