Clueless

The clue for 30-down in Friday’s New York Times crossword is, “something most fish lack.” I tried “galoshes,” but it wouldn’t fit, nor would “Social Security number,” though I’m fairly sure both answers are correct, as are “adam’s apple” and of course “bicycle.”

“Hubcap” fit perfectly, but it didn’t work too well with the crossing words. Some days you’re just meant to feel stupid — unless you’re an incorrigible optimist, as I am, so that leaves the puzzle writer as the designated imbecile. For the sake of his children, I won’t say who it was, but his first name is something that most fish lack.

Answers: The word he wanted was “eyelid,” and his first name is “john,” which fish don’t have because they just, you know, in the water, as they used to say around my home town about psychology – “The ‘p’ is silent like in swimming.”
