Beetle Remembered
Barb sent me a link to sfgate.com, which offered some old comic strips, so I clicked on Beetle Bailey. This yielded a dumb two-panel strip, but what I remember about Beetle Bailey was a Sunday edition when Mort Walker’s comic strip was brand new (1951?).
Beetle found a flower somewhere and went to the Sergeant to ask if it would be all right to plant it in the yard outside the barracks.
“I don’t know,†the Sergeant said. “Nobody ever asked me that before.â€
At the time, I thought that was hysterically funny. Today, after a half century of intervening experience with various bureaucracies, I’m not sure it even rises above the quotidian average.
