Rich Ironies
An outstanding column by Frank Rich in the “Week in Review” section of this Sunday’s Times, surveying the patterns of corruption in the Bush administration.
After alluding to the latest scandals (Gonzales and Wolfowitz), these are among his observations:
“Yet each man’s latest infractions, however serious, are mere misdemeanors next to their roles in the Iraq war. What’s being lost in the Beltway uproar is the extent to which the lying, cronyism and arrogance showcased by the current scandals are of a piece with lying, cronyism and arrogance that led to all the military funerals that Mr. Bush dares not attend.”
*
“Like the CIA leak case, each new scandal is filling in a different piece of the elaborate White House scheme to cover up the lies that took us into Iraq and the failures that keep us mired there.
*
“A government with values this sleazy couldn’t possibly win a war.”

Unfortunately, a government this sleazy is sending men and women to die, has packed the Supreme Court with right wing idealogues, is making a mess out of Medicare (although few have caught on yet), is stripping us of our civil liberties, and has generally taken the low road wherever possible. And think of the damage they can still do.

Did you have to remind us? All too painfully true, and some of the damage will take decades to undo. But their ability to trash the country and the constitution is shrinking fast, and the cycle of scandals, hearings, and prosecutions has further, maybe much further, to go. Given the rising level of disgust, the 2008 elections may set the stage to reverse the process. And about that time, Clarence Thomas will start thinking about his legacy and turn liberal. (Well, this is humor-infested blog, you know.)

You’re not kidding about the rising level of disgust. Frank Rich helps me stomach it just by articulating it all so well. These days, I just apply his column directly to my forehead like a cold compress. It eases the vertigo.
