Me & Usury
Some people have money problems because they don’t look ahead. Or because they don’t have any money. Me, I have a a penchant for planning and a Chase Bank VISA card with a $22,000 limit.
I thought, why let them keep all that money, the way banks wheel and deal these days, so I’ll get a $22,000 cash advance for safe keeping. But then, what if I broke a mirror and had seven years of bad luck? If I actually broke a mirror, it might anger me to the point that I’d break another one and have 14 years of bad luck.
Since in that case I couldn’t make payments on the loan, Chase would have the right to charge me their “default rate,†which is 32.34%. They can start charging that even if you’re just late with a payment.
During my 14 years of bad luck, at 32.34% the $22,000 balance would grow to $1,100,278, and they would be after me with a vengeance.
That’s why they call it the Chase bank.
